OSHA Compliance Programs
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's hazard communication standard
consistently ranks among the most frequently cited as a result of inspections. Generally, the
hazard communication standard applies to any defined hazardous chemical used in the
workplace. All employers are required to inform their employees of the potential health hazards
associated with exposure to such chemicals used or stored in the workplace. Information must be
transmitted through a program which comprises such elements as:
- A written plan
- Warning labels on stationary containers;
- Material safety data sheets; and
- Employee training programs
OSHA interpretations state that 'if a chemical is used on a regular basis and if
over-exposure to this chemical could create a medical problem for the employee, it has to be
tested. Once tested, and found to be within compliance limits, sampling does not have to be
redone unless there is a change in workplace practices or engineering controls (includes
ventilation seasonal changeovers). However, it is legally prudent to retest , especially known
Class I Carcinogens at least once a year.
EnviroAnalysis Audits are very detailed and concur with OSHA's testing accuracy
